What To Look For In A FLip Screen Vlogging Camera

There are a variety of different aspects you need to look for with a vlogging camera which we have covered above. There are some must haves in a vlogging camera such as the flip screen or articulating screen.

The video quality of the camera must be at least HD or Ultra HD, High definition video is the standard for YouTube. This is because viewers of the content are watching on HD screens and can stream using their internet connections without any problems at this level.

4K Video is upcoming, with more and more phone screens, TV's and faster internet connections are being upgraded to support 4K streaming.  This is ultimately the future of vlogging, in the next two years we will see the majority of vloggers filming in 4K. This is evident from some of the vlogging camera releases this year supporting 4K at 30 and 60 fps.

Optical/ In body image stabilisation and Autofocus ability within a camera also supports the quality of a video with many cameras such as the Sony RX100 line having some of the best autofocus ability out there to make sure the subject is always in focus as there is nothing worse than an out of focus video or shaky footage.

Not to forget audio quality, which is imperatively important while you're vlogging, You can have a video with 4K quality but if you're audio sucks your viewers aren't going to stay around for a long time. Most of the cameras we have reviewed feature microphone jacks where you can connect external microphone such as Rode Lavalier's or Shotgun microphones to have great sounding video.

What Accessories for a Flip Screen Vlogging Camera?

We would recommend using a tripod, for vlogging. Many of the YouTube community swear by mini tripods for vlogging. these tripods are small, and fit in your hand to make it easier than holding the camera in that position that may make your hand tired after a while. this also improves stability while you record.

Recommended Tripods

Manfrotto Pixi

Best Mini Tripod

Used by the majority of YouTube Vloggers as their main vlogging tripod for on the Go Vlogging the Manfrotto Pixi is a vlogging essential!

Mactrem PT55

Best Tripod

If you're looking for a traditional Tripod for your vlogs, we would recommend the Mactrem PT55!

Sound is an important aspect of video, the viewer may see you in 4K or HD but they might still be hearing you in standard defintion. Most of the in built mics work great, but when venturing out and about it can be hard to hear over ambient noise, these microphones capture your voice directly giving better sound quality and a better overall video!

Recommended Microphones

Rode Video Mic Pro Plus

The Rode Video Mic Pro Plus is hands down one of the most popular and one of the best microphones out there for cameras that feature a microphone jack!

Rode Video Mic GO

The Rode VideoMic Go is a great budget microphone to get great sound on a budget!

We would also suggest using a mount for your camera, especially if your camera has a flip screen as the hot shoe may get in the way if you're using an external microphone. The mount places your microphone to the side of the camera so you can see yourself on the lcd screen without any interference.

How Much are Flip Screen Vlogging Cameras

How much is a vlog camera depends on your budget however we would not recommend any camera that we wouldn't use ourselves and that any other major YouTubers wouldn't use. There are cheap cameras out there from off label brands that say they shoot in 4K but these are mostly upscaled 4K and you don't get that same video quality you see with the likes of Sony, Canon, Nikon and other big name brands, so be aware of this.

We would recommend a budget of $300-$500 for your vlogging camera, this may seem like a lot but in terms of quality and longevity of the camera it is well worth it, especially if you're getting serious about making YouTube Videos or are interested in videography.

However to get started with YouTube, you don't need to immediately go out and buy an expensive vlogging camera you can start vlogging with your camera on your phone. Most phones nowadays have HD quality video and some even have 4K quality. So start there and work your way up if you don't currently have the budget for a dedicated camera like the ones above!
