1. Sony A6400 - Best Vlogging Camera 2020

Quick Specs

  • Type: Compact MIrrorless
  • Sensor: APS-C
  • Max Movie Resolution: 4K
  • Monitor: 180 Degree 3Inch LCD
  • Vlogger Level: Intermediate

The Sony A6400 is the camera YouTubers have been begging Sony to make for years. We have crowned the A6400 the Best Vlogging Camera of 2020, not for the reasons you may expect!

The A6400 is an APS-C sensor camera, decked out with a brand new real-time autofocus tracking system surprisingly in an entry level mirrorless

Video Quality and Recording

When it comes to video quality, the A6400 is remarkable. It has the ability to record in 4K QFHD, basically oversampled 4K that produces some stunning videos with depth, vibrant colour and great detail, which is great for any vlogger. It records 4K at 30FPS and Full HD at 60FPS.

When using USB to power the camera, you can record as much as you like without the constraints of a battery.

Real Time AutoFocus Tracking - World's Fastest AF!

This years key feature of this Sony is the 425 AF points with real time tracking, including eye AF. This is revolutionary for an entry level mirrorless and works extremely well when recording video. It has an insanely fast, actually the worlds fastest and complex autofocus system that just works and is perfect for vlogging on the go, recording fast moving scenes such as pets, cars, sports or your adventures!

Flip Screen - 180 Degrees

Vloggers prayers everywhere have been answered! This camera features a 180 degree flip screen camera that allows you to see what is in the frame. However, due to the placement of an external mic may hinder you from actually seeing the screen, similar to that of the Sony RX5. However, this is easily fixed by using a side mount for the mic for the perfect vlogging setup.

Build Quality

Build quality is what you would expect from Sony, its pretty solid. If you're upgrading from a previous Sony you'll be used to the layout. The camera is a good weight, portable, and durable enough for vlogging. It isn't weather sealed, but can take rain, winds but be careful of water getting in the battery compartment as that is the flap is  the one of the weaker sealed points on the camera

What We Liked

  • 180 Degree Flip Screen
  • Fast Autofocus
  • 4K Video Quality
  • Great Low Light and Stabilization

What We Didnt Like

  • External Mics get in the way of Flip Screen

2. Canon G7X Mark II  - Last Years Best Vlogging Camera

Quick Specs

  • Type: Compact
  • Sensor size: 1 Inch
  • Movie Resolution: 1080P 60FPS
  • Monitor: 180 Degree Flip Screen
  • Vlogger Level: New / Intermediate

Canon's G7X Mark II unfortunately loses its title this year of best vlogging camera but is one of those cameras that was made for vlogging.  Its the old faithful of the vlogging world, with thousands of YouTubers using it as one of their main vlogging cameras such as Faze Rug.

This is due to its reliability, light, ultra portable body  with a one inch sensor, with an aperture of 1.8-2.8 optical zoom lens with built in image stabilisation making it ideal for vlogging on the go.

Video Quality

The G7X Mark II records in Full 1080p at 60 Frames per second for about 30 minutes. The video quality is great for a compact. Combined with its great low light performance and video stabilisation and auto focus video quality looks great.

While it doesn't capture at 4k, thats currently okay. 4K requires increased specs for editing and rendering and currently YouTube is watched in 1080p by default, therefore if you're a new vlogger or a mid level vlogger, we would recommend this as a vlogging camera.

Video Stabilisation

Using the DIGIC 7 Processor the camera features great image stabilization that stops your video from looking shaky while moving around versus some competing cameras, as well as fast auto focus and impressive low light performance.

Flip Screen Vlogging Camera

One of the most loved features on this camera is the 3inch articulating touch screen, Vloggers all over have made this their camera of choice due to the touch screen on such a compact camera.

Build Quality

On the camera build, its lightweight, portable but durable enough to be brought out for regular use. This vlogging camera features an articulating screen which is one main necessity for vloggers.  The touch screen and interface on the camera is responsive and quick.

YouTubers such as Zoella, Joey Graceffa have used this camera for their vlogs.

What we liked

  • Great Video Quality at 1080p 60FPS
  • Light and Portable
  • Video Stabilisation and Auto Focus are fast and smooth
  • Great low light ability

What We Didnt Like

  • Not much!

3. Sony RX100 V - Best 4K Compact 2020

Sony RX100 V Specs

  • Type: Compact
  • Sensor: 1 Inch CMOS
  • Max Movie Resolution: 4k
  • Type:
  • Recommendation: New & Intermediate

Sony makes another appearance in the Top 5 vlogging cameras this year, for good reason. This compact is the best 4K Compact out there currently due to its impressive number of features. The RX100 V features a  20.1MP 1inch CMOS Sensor, in a camera this size and this portable is quite a feat.

Jumping straight into video, the RX100 captures superb video quality with the ability to record in stunning 4K, actually higher by 1.7 times due to to the sensor size but Sony downsamples.

You can record in 4K for 5 minutes at a time which some will see as a downside but for vloggers, its perfect being realistic any YouTuber knows there are multiple takes. It also records 1080p HD for up to 30 minutes, and can shoot up to 120FPS.

In terms of Auto-Focus, the cameras AF system is one of the best, tracking its subjects quick and effectively, focusing on the right subjects in the frame even locking on and tracking which is very impressive for a camera this small.

The Optical image stabilisation is also pretty good rivalling the canon g7X, vloggers can be sure they get a smooth experience even when off the tripod.

While we do love the flip screen on this camera, which is perfect for getting yourself and knowing what sin in the frame there is one major downfall which is the lack of ports for an external microphone.

For those who are used to external mic quality, you may need to record on something like a Zoom H4N and edit in post production.

What We Liked

  • Great Video Quality in 4K & 1080P HD
  • Auto Focus and AE Tracking
  • Great flip screen
  • Portable Size with great specs

What We Didnt Like

  • Lack of an external mic port
  • High price point

4. Sony A7R III - Best 4K UHD Vlogging Camera

Sony A7R III Specs

  • Type: Mirrorless
  • Sensor size: BSI CMOS
  • Movie Resolution: 4K
  • Monitor: 180 Degree Flip Screen
  • Vlogger Level: Pro

Sony are a serious challenger in the camera industry producing some absolutely great cameras and lenses in the past few years, that ought to have Canon and Nikon shaking in their boots.

The A7R III is a high resolution mirrorless with a 42.2MP BSI CMOS sensor like its younger sibiling, the A7R II; however the Mark III is more capable and does not suffer the same issues the A7R II had.

Video Quality

The A7R III can shoot 30 frames per second in 4k UHD utilises the full width of the sensor  producing a stunning 4K Video with beautiful colour and clarity due to its dynamic range. Combined with its auto focus, 5- Axis stabilisation and its ability to shoot in Super 35, its the real winner.

This camera takes amazing shots and video in low lighting competing with that of the Panasonic GH5S.

Auto Focus

The AutoFocus on the Sony A7R 3 is fast, accurate and reliable with 400 autofocus points, one of the best available at this price point standing close to Sony's A9.  It performs exceedingly well in low light situations similar to that of the A6500 which is featured down below.

Battery Life

The Mark 3 has a new battery that lasts longer than previous versions, three times longer to be exact, so you wont be swapping out your batteries as frequently. You also have the option to charge your camera through USB C on your computer.

Customisable Menu System

One of my favourite features that I'm sure seasoned vloggers will appreciate is the ability to customize the menu system on the camera. This allows you to make a fully customised menu from picture profiles to codecs. This allows you to cut time out of finding things in the traditional menu setup and having it right there in front of you.

Build Quality

When you first pick up this camera, the handling and the feel of the camera is so much better and comfortable due to an increase in the grip size. The joystick, buttons and dials are well made and placed on this camera making it more efficient and easy to use, similar to that of an Apple device.

What We Liked

  • Amazing 4k Video Quality
  • Low Lighting and AF Ability
  • Flip Screen For Vlogging
  • Build Quality

What We Didnt Like

  • Very High Price Point

5. Canon EOS 80D - Best DSLR 2020

Canon 80D Specs

  • Type: DSLR
  • Sensor: APS-C
  • Movie Resolution: 1080p 60FPS
  • Monitor: 3'In Fully Articulating
  • Vlogger Level: Intermediate

The Canon 80D is the next step up from the famous 70D, these cameras have been used by YouTubers such as since the dawn of YouTube and were once posed as the best overall cameras for vlogging, nonetheless the 80D takes the spot for Best DSLR for vlogging .

In terms of video the 80D rocks a 24.2 Megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor, with a max resolution of 1080p at 60FPS with a HDR video mode.

Unfortunately 4K isn't available on this model, however resolution isn't the most important thing as we all know, the 80D delivers clear and vibrant video with improvements to Auto Focus which is noticeably more smooth if you're coming from the 70D.

The 80D performs well in low lighting utilising the DIGIC 6 Processor. The ISO ranges from 100 to 128,000, which is ideal if you're primarily recording inside or even outside for late night shots however would recommend at least some lighting, they're not military see in the dark grade just yet!

Coming from other Canon DSLRs, there is still the beautiful 3inch fully articulating touch screen, which is such a necessity for vloggers which is why this camera is one of the most popular over the past few years with vloggers like Lilly Singh otherwise known as IISuperWomanII using the 80D.

If you're coming from other canon cameras, you will be able to use existing lenses with compatability with EF and EF-S lenses and use existing batteries, did we mention that battery life is pretty great on this camera.

What We Liked

  • 1080P HD @ 60FPS
  • Great Low Light Ability
  • Fully Articulating Touch Screen

What We Didnt Like

  • No 4K for a camera of this price point

6. GoPro HERO7 Black - Best 4K Action Vlogging Camera

GoPro HERO 7 Black Quick Specs

  • Type: Action Camera
  • Sensor:
  • Movie Resolution: 4k 60 FPS
  • Monitor: 3 Inch Touchscreen
  • Vlogger Level:  New/intermediate

GoPro not only graces this list as the finest Action Vlogging Camera in the land, but topped our list in Best Action Cameras this year. GoPro has really upped their game in the past few years with this camera bringing a lot of upgrades including one which makes it a must buy for any action vlogger.

Getting into Video Quality, the GoPro Captures 4K at 60FPS in True 4K, you may have heard of other action cameras that are cheaper that record in 4K Quality but these cheaper cameras have upscaled not 4K unlike the HERO7 Black.

The Hypersmooth Stabilization is this years must buy feature in this GoPro, GoPro compares it to gimbal like smoothness and I must say, it does really look like it. The electronic image stabilisation has come a long way. Perfect for high action sports, for buttery stabilisation.

Unlike the HERO6, Hypersmooth can also be used when shooting in 4K at 60FPS which is a huge advantage for those looking to get those shots.

Featuring on this years go pro is a brand new feature, Time warp which essentially, time lapse footage without a tripod due to hypersmooth in whatever movement you want also allowing you to speed up the speed up to 30 times to make smaller length timelapses for YouTube B-Roll Etc.

The GoPro also allows you to use voice control similar to your Alexa, except you're screaming GoPro, Start Recording at the top of your lungs while you go down the side of a mountain on your bike.

Essentially the one downside to this camera, yet again with GoPro is the battery life, I mean guys please let there be an improvement in the HERO8, but the battery prices have gone down.

  • Extremely durable housing unit
  • Hypersmooth Stabilization
  • Great 4K Video Quality for adventures
  • Waterproofing

  • Battery Life
  • Audio quality isn't the best

7. Canon EOS M6 - Best Starter Mirrorless Vlogging Camera

Canon EOS M6 Specs

  • Type: Mirrorless
  • Sensor: APS-C
  • Movie Resolution: 1080p 60FPS
  • Monitor: 180 Degree Flip Screen
  • Vlogger Level: New & Intermediate

If you're looking for a starter mirrorless, this could be the one for you. Armed with Full HD, great in body stabilisation and a vlogger essential, the flip screen. It meets all the criteria for an essential vlogging camera for 2020.

The EOS M6 features a 24.2 inch CMOS APS-C Sensor with the ability to shoot in 1080pHD at 60 Frames per second. Again, like the canon cameras on this list no 4K but you could check out the Canon M50 with 4K but we wouldn't personally recommend it.

The M6 has Canons Dual Pixel AutoFocus technology which basically means the  focusing on the M6 is fast, smooth and doesn't hunt for the subject, which could be seen and heard in older canon cameras.

Paired with 5 Axis image stabilisation, for smooth and silky stabilisation even when on the go this makes the bearings of a great vlogging camera.

The flip screen is similar to the flip screen on the Canon G7X II, it flips upwards and the M6 Also has space for a mic jack to plug in your external microphone!

If you're not bothered about 4K just yet, since YouTube is mostly 1080p content at best this is an ideal camera for the new vlogger and less strain when editing on your PC or Mac.

What We Liked

  • Great Starting Vlogging Camera
  • Affordable pricing
  • Autofocus with Dual pixel Tech
  • In Body stabilization

What We Didnt Like

  • Lacks 4K

8. Panasonic G7X - Best Value 4K Camera

Panasonic G7 Specs

  • Type: Mirrorless
  • Sensor: Micro Four Thirds
  • Max Video Resolution: 4k 30 FPS
  • Monitor: 180 Degree Touch Screen
  • Vlogger Level: Intermediate

The Panasonic G7 is a midrange that packs a punch. In terms of its features such as the flip out LCD touchscreen and its value for money.

The Lumix G7 is a an ultra portable, light mirrorless that features 4k 30p video capture with a 14-42mm f/3.5 -5.6 II aspherical lens that we found very impressive from a "kit" perspective and a 16 megapixel sensor that provides great ISO performance.

In terms of movie capture it captures in 4k @ 30p, 1080p, 720p, for those who want to continue in HD but be future proofed for 4K. The autofocus on the camera is good, and produce a nice bokeh depending on the arpeture.

Due to lack of IS in the body, I would recommend this camera with a tripod when recording. If you're looking for an "On The Go" camera I'd recommend the G7X Mark II

In terms of the camera body,  it features a  flip screen 3 Inch LCD  Touchscreen, well placed dials, inputs for microphones however it lacks the metal body of a G4 with a lighter but sturdier plastic body with the construction you'd expect to find in a panasonic, very well built.

For this price point, its tough to find a camera that can stand to the Lumix G7 with its array of features to push you into mid range.

What We Liked

  • Flip Screen Touchscreen
  • Great 4K Recording Ability
  • Affordable for amount of features

What We Didnt Like

  • Lacks IS in the body
  • Requires changing of settings to get good video quality

9. Panasonic Lumix GH5S - Best Overall Video Quality

Panasonic Lumix GH5S Specs

  • Type: Mirrorless
  • Sensor:
  • Max Video Resolution: 4K DCI
  • Monitor: 3 Inch Fully Articulating
  • Vlogger Level: Intermediate

Another Panasonic Camera in the mix,  the Lumix GH5S is an option for professional vloggers loaded with top quality video. Panasonic have definitely made the GH5S with videographers in mind due to its mind boggling specs that essentially blows other cameras out of the water.

The GH5S shoots in 4K, saying that is an understatement to an extent, this isnt your average 4K.  Its DCI 4K. Its amazingly good due to its 4:2:2 color subsampling and recording in 10 bit colors, which means 10 billion colours up to 30FPS. For the non-techies, your'e going to have amazingly detailed Ultra high definition video, so much so that its approved for HD Content Acquisition by the European Broadcast Union.

In terms of low lighting the GH5S shoots brilliantly in low light, slaying nearly every other camera shooting in the night, figuratively due to its dual native ISO design that can capture crisp video without as much noise even at higher ISO settings.

However this camera doesn't feature In body image stabilisation and still has contrast detect autofocus which is subpar for those who are used to Sony's or Canon's AF Systems. For vloggers who use gimbals, mounts, tripods, this should be no problem.

It does however feature a 3inch fully articulatiing touch screen which is sure to please vloggers who are considering this camera for vlogging.

  • Best Video Quality we have seen
  • Amazing Low Light Ability
  • Fully articulating screen

  • No IBIS, needs gimbal/tripods
  • AutoFocus isn't what it could be

10. FujiFilm X-A5 - Best Vlogging Camera for Social Media

FujiFilm X-A5 Specs

  • Type: Mirrorless
  • Sensor: APS-C
  • Max Video Resolution: 4k 15FPS
  • Monitor: 3 Inch 180 Degree FlipScreen
  • Vlogger Level: Beginner

The FujiFilm X-A5 is a FujiFilm Mirrorless thats highkey born to be a vlogging camera, its essentially the ultimate social media companion due to its good looks its highly instagrammable and of course, vloggable!

The X-A5 Features a 24.2MP thats capable of capturing 4K at 15FPS, which can look a bit laggy which defeats the point of this entirely but rest assured its ability in 1080p is great with a frame rate of 60FPS.

What we love about this camera is when you activate the flip screen into the 180degree angle it automatically turns on its autofocus system's eye detection, so you are tracked and focused on in the shot.

The X-A5 has an ISO of 12800 which allows for good low lighting situations, wether youre filming indoors or outside on a well lit street. Its also one of the lighter cameras to carry around, so if you're a vlogger that doesn't want something too heavy but wants to also photograph for instagram, etc this may be an ideal camera for you.

It also has a Flip Screen that flips 180 Degrees for vlogging to make sure in the frame of the camera. The battery life is also great for vlogging on the go without having to change the battery regularly.

What We Liked

  • Performs well with 1080p HD Recording
  • Great battery life
  • Good low light performance
  • Great picture quality for Social Media platforms.

What We Didnt Like

  • 4K Recording is sluggish

Vlogging Camera Buyers Guide

Video Quality

Video Quality probably the key factor when you're looking for a vlogging camera. You want your videos to have a noticeable quality improvement with a vlogging camera, so that your videos are easier to watch. Video quality is made up of a few elements, such as

- Video Resolution
- Low light ability
- Stabilisation
- Autofocus

Having these elements in a camera make the overall quality of your videos a lot better.

Video Resolution

Video resolution is one aspect of video quality, as you may know 4K video is surely where video is going and where cameras are heading with most vlogging cameras on the market reaching that point. YouTube is currently not at that point with most videos being produced in 1080P HD, but as technology evolves and becomes more readily available we will progress to that stage, but not just yet.

1080p HD v 4K Resolution?

1080P HD is currently standard with 1920*1080 Pixels. It produces high definition quality, as its the standard your workstation and editing programs will be able to handle these videos without any hitches. The Majority of YouTube Viewers have HD displays that watch 1080p Videos by Default on Mobile, Desktop and TV.

4K Resolution is a term used for 3840 × 2160 pixels. It produces higher quality video dubbed ultra high definition, and ultimately because its capturing more pixels in a frame produces larger file sizes. A small number of your viewers will be capable of watching 4K Content, mainly on TV Displays.

Therefore you need to be sure that you will have the equipment such as SD cards that are able to store these larger files and work with them on your current workstation (PC/Mac/Tablet).

You need to decide wether the 4K Camera is worth the investment in the long run and how it fits with your workflow. Remember this is just one aspect, and not the most important but nice to have to future proof yourself if you're deciding to invest a lot in a camera, as 4K Cameras also capture really well in 1080p HD.

Stabilisation is something that is very important to most vloggers. If your someone who vlogs on the go, then this is an essential in a vlogging camera. This feature stabilises your video so when your moving around you the video isn't constantly shaking because to be fair none of us have a gimbal or a tripod like hand.

One camera in our line up doesn't have the best stabilisation which is the Panasonic GH5S, which may not be suited to vloggers who do not have gimbals or setup for stabilisation.

Auto Focus Ability

AutoFocus is important, this element of tracks the subjects in the frame of the video, so you're never out of focus. Fast and smooth autofocus is something to look for in cameras and we have taken this into consideration in the list of best vlogging cameras chosen above.

Low Lighting Ability

Low Light Ability is one of the key features I personally look for in a camera, while vlogging on the go you never know what conditions are ahead of you especially if you're vlogging indoors. Cameras with the ability to capture more light are great, because you more than likely don't have your light boxes with you at all times.

Microphone Input

For new vloggers, microphone isn't something thats instantly thought of, but once you start recording with an internal mic you can definitely see that the quality is different to the YouTubers you watch on a regular basis.

These YouTubers use external mics, we have tried to feature as many vlogging cameras with microphone inputs for this reason as it allows you to improve that aspect of your video wether you want to do it now or in the future.

Flip Screen

Flip screens are a vloggers dream, its hard to vlog when you don't know whats in the frame. You can buy external monitors but thats just one extra thing.

Flip screens wether 180 Degrees that flip up or down such as in the Sony A6400 or fully articulating which flip to the left and 360 Degrees as seen in some of the Canon's such as the Canon 80D

Vlogging cameras are meant to be portable at best, if you're travelling a lot you want to be able to bring it with you. Mirrorless cameras have made it a lot easier to have a great quality camera with a compact body such as the Sony AR7 III and the A6400. While DSLRs are a bit bulkier and a tad heavier to hold they don't make the ideal vlogging cameras but if you plan to vlog and make videos from a fixed location they can be ideal.

Price is also a factor in this, you should set out a budget on what you want to spend on a vlogging camera and then the specs you want in a vlogging camera. If you're new to vlogging consider additional expenses like tripods, SD Cards, external mics and even lenses.

Our Reccomendations

These are our final recommendations on the best vlogging cameras based on different levels of vloggers. Each of these cameras will serve you very well at different levels of Beginner, Intermediate and Pro

Best Camera for New Vloggers

Canon G7X Mark II

If you're getting into vlogging or a new vlogger wishing to upgrade your camera to one of the best, we would recommend the G7X Mark II due to its High quality video capture, low light and autofocus ability, stabilisation and flip screen.

Best Camera for Intermediate Vloggers

Sony A6400

The Sony A6400 is our vlogging camera of choice and a recommendation for intermediate vloggers who have grown their channels and looking for a camera that will ensure that you're set up for the future due to its ability to shoot in 4k and its world class autofocus.

Best Camera for Pro Vloggers

Sony A7R III

This was a tough one, but the Sony A7R III took the title of best camera for pro vloggers over the panasonic GH5S due to its autofocus and in body stabilisation for vlogging on the go which the Panasonic GH5S lacked.

This camera does exceptionally well in low light situations, with visually stunning video quality and vibrant color.
