Best Softbox lighting For Video

Lighting is one of the most essential parts of creating a video and is probably the most common mistake which new creators make. Not having excellent lighting in a video sets the tone of a video. It makes the overall video challenging to watch and takes away form the content of the video.

We've reviewed some of the best softboxes out there, so you don't have to. These softboxes will provide you with sufficient lighting to make your videos shine, quite literally.

If you haven't heard of softboxes before, let us break it down for you. A softbox spreads light across an area. As the name suggests, the light emitted is soft, so it doesn't mess with the white balance. A softbox will reduce any shadows in the frame and will provide a beautiful light that will accentuate the features to make you look your best.

Neweer Studio LED Lighting Kit

  • Lighting Type: LED
  • Light Temperature: 3200k - 5500k
  • Height: 79cm - 188cm
  • Power Source - AC/Li-ion Batteries

The Neewer brand is one of the most popular brands of lighting amongst YouTubers. Neweer provides top-quality lighting products, and this softbox is no different. In the push away from Bulb lighting, the Neweer lighting kit contains three LED-powered lightboxes and boom for hairline lighting.

Light Settings

The LED Lightboxes allow you to customize the light settings, so you get the right balance for your videos. This includes 1-100% brightness, you control the output of the intensity as well as the temperature of the light produced. This ranges from 3200k, which creates a warm glow, similar to that of sunset and 5500k, which is identical to bright outdoor lighting.

Whats In The Kit?

This kit features the two studio softboxes themselves that feature a white diffuser to soften the light source, so it enhances skin tone, and of course, the two softbox stands. The two stands are height adjustable from 79cm approx 31inches to 188cm which is 74 inches high.

Power Options

What we loved about these softboxes is the option to use AC or a battery to power it. You can use AC by directly plugging into a power source or the use of a lithium-ion battery, which allows you to use the battery to power your lighting. This is great if you want to travel with your softboxes, film a video outside, or if you won't have immediate access to the power source.

Thanks to LED lighting, they are relatively low powered at only 48W, half the power required for traditional bulb lighting.

Fovitec Studio Pro Lighting Kit

  • Lighting Type: E27 CFL Bulbs
  • Light Temperature: 5500k
  • Sockets: 2* 5 Socket, 1x1 Socket
  • Height: 6ft
  • Power Required: AC Plug

The Fovitech Studio Pro is a lighting kit with 3 softboxes, stands, a boom, and a carry case. The difference with this setup and other setups on the list is the socket fixtures. Two of the included socket fixtures have 5 sockets available, meaning you can fit up to 5 bulbs in a single softbox.

The Single socket box can be used as a hair light of backlight, using the boom arm. With the 5 socket boxes, you can create different lighting effects by using different numbers of bulbs in separate sockets.

There is no dimmer available on these lightboxes. Still, multiple power switches are allowing you to turn on and off each of the 5 sockets. Nevertheless, you could use lower-powered bulbs or use a different configuration of bulbs using the sockets to achieve the lighting you want.

When using all of the bulbs, it can get quite hot. This is to be expected with that number of bulbs, so after operating leave it cool down before you dismantle or move the softboxes.

Due to the number of sockets and bulbs, this requires an AC plug to give power and is not available using battery power.

Fovitec produces high-quality equipment, we liked how sturdy the stands were for the lightboxes, even though overall they're pretty lightweight. When using multiple bulbs, it can get top-heavy when fully extended. Overall, they are pretty easy to set up, taking no less than 10-15 minutes.

What to Look For In A Softbox

Type - LED v CFL Bulb

LED setups give you more flexibility. With LED softboxes you have the ability to both dim the lights and change the colour temperature. LED Setups are generally lighter, more durable and use less power  than their CFL bulb counterparts.

CFL Bulbs - you can dim the lighting. They are generally easy to change and readily available in shops to buy. CFL bulbs output a colour temperature of 5500k (daylight lighting)

Multiple Sockets - This is only for CFL based softboxes. Most lighting kits above come with a socket head that features multiple sockets and bulbs so you can create the perfect lighting for your video.

Softbox kits come singular, or with two softboxes and pro kits come with 3 softboxes and a boom. You will need to decide based on what you're looking for which is suitable for you. Most vloggers have a dual kit setup, but the extra hairlight can be useful for those with longer hair.

Why Use softboxes for Video

Softboxes give you great looking lighting in your videos. If youre shooting inside, the light can be dull and force you to use low lighting on your camera which in effect can cause noise.

Softboxes will give you improved softer lighting to give you that professional lighting feel to your videos. This makes your video look a lot better overall and takes a lot of strain off your camera to produce the best video quality.
