#1 GoPro Hero7 Black
 - Best Action Video Camera 2019

  • Video Quality: 4K Video at 60 FPS
  • Image resolution: 12MP
  • Video Stabilisation: Hyper
  • Waterproof: Up To 33FT
  • Voice Control: Yes

GoPro has always been one of the leading brands when it comes to action cameras. The GoPro HERO7 Black might be one of the most expensive options on the market today. However, it does live up to the hype. The unit is really stylish and durable for most terrains and every vlogger can use it. We recommend it as one of the very best vlogging cameras on the market today.

The video quality is great at 4K60, making it one of the best quality cameras at the moment. For all your photos, the 12MP camera will have them in good quality. For the serious vloggers, you can also use this camera to live stream some of your adventures. Time-lapse videos can also be taken with a longer increment and this makes sharing longer adventures easier.

Having the HyperSmooth Stabilization feature is ideal for those without a steady hand. According to the manufacturer, the camera will predict some of your movements to ensure that the camera can catch them in the best quality. Additionally, the camera allows you to use ultra slow motion mode for slowing down all your task up to 8X.

The HERO7 Black includes a rugged design and it has been tested to be waterproof for up to 33-feet without a housing cover to even protect it. It includes voice command as well for when you can’t reach the camera and need it to start recording.

Pros

  • Waterproof for up to 33 feet
  • 4K60 video quality with voice control
  • Includes HyperSmooth Stabilization technology
  • 8X slow motion feature
  • Clear 12MP photos

Cons

  • The battery life is not the best
  • Livestream is only available in 1080HD
  • Really expensive

Best action cameras under $400

Sony FDR-X3000

  • Video Quality: 4K Video at 60 FPS
  • Image resolution: 8.3MP
  • Video Stabilisation: Yes
  • Waterproof: Up To 200 FT
  • Voice Control: Yes

The Sony FDR-X3000 is one of the cameras that Sony has put their heart and their soul into to compare with a brand like GoPro and they have actually pulled it off. Instead of following suit with the design and copying what many brands are doing with the GoPro, Sony has broken this routine with the FDR-X3000 model design.

It is slightly bulkier and goes back to the traditional design of the older recording cameras. However, it has elegantly shaped corners and weighs roughly 4.3-ounces to easily fit into your hands. The body has been described as not only stylish but durable as well and the camera has dust protection and splash protection. It can also withstand deeper water at up to 200-feet.

As for the resolution, 4K60 should be more than enough for every user. The camera includes the time lapse feature at a 4K resolution as well and Optical SteadyShot Professional Technology will keep your picture clear without any shaking interference. Additionally, the camera includes 3X zoom capabilities with the 12MP camera taking pictures at a steady 10 frames per second.

Unfortunately, this model does not come with the voice control feature, but you can choose to add an additional remote control. The remote control will make it easier to control the camera from a distance, especially when live streaming yourself for the vlog. Those who like to take pictures over the course of a specific time period can choose to do this at 8.3MP with time lapse.

The Sony FDR-X3000 is one of the best cameras for underwater photos and videos. The camera has a sleek design, but the waterproof features are some of the very best. Since the housing is already included, you will be saving, while the stabilization technology even keeps the camera steady under water.

It might be fairly expensive, bordering some of the most expensive action cameras today, but all the features are worth the price. Additionally, you can also tell everyone that you have moved on from the traditional GoPro camera that everyone believes in to be the best option on the market for vlogging and taking active videos.

Pros

  • Extremely durable housing unit
  • Optical Steadyshot for steady shooting
  • Timelapse at 4K Resolution
  • Waterproof up to 200FT
  • Stunning 4K Video at 60 FPS

Cons

  • No voice control
  • Really expensive

Garmin VIRB Ultra 30

  • Video Quality: 4K Video at 30 FPS
  • Image resolution: 12MP
  • Video Stabilisation: Yes
  • Waterproof: Up To 40FT
  • Voice Control: Yes

The Garmin VIRB Ultra 30 Action Camera is slightly larger than most of the others and as you might have guessed, it does focus a lot of the power and the features around the state of the art GPS technology.

The camera will deliver crystal clear 4K video footage at a rate of 30 frames per second. This rivals the GoPro HERO 5 and in comparison the Garmin delivers sharper vibrant video at 4K 30FPS and 1080p 60FPS.  When recording you do have the option to turn on image stabilisation which will stop shaky video, it also comes with a mount that will also reduce the shakiness.

Garmin is known for their GPS features, and the VIRB is no different, it has the best GPS out there in an action camera. So much so that it is used for a lot of action sports to map the route etc.

One of the features of the VIRB is that is can put an overlay over the video to display the route and also measure the G-force, speed, and the elevation on that route. Garmin calls this G-Metrix, which is done in post production which is ideal for those who are looking to display that within their videos.  The Garmin also has the ability to connect to a car via OBD2 for more accurate readings directly from the car itself.

The VIRB features a easy to use navigation with touch screen that is both intuitive and responsive, unlike some of the lower end models. With voice control, you can command it from a distance to ensure that you capture every moment, including a few time lapse sessions.

As with the GoPro's the VIRB Ultra 30, the battery life isn't the best, probably down to the variety of features and options such as GPS which can take a lot of battery giving up to 30 mins with all features turned on. Recording in 1080p Will get you 1HR or 1HR 30Mins of battery life without GPS features.

If you own any of Garmin's wearables you can also connect it to the camera and record remotely or using the inbuilt voice command functions which work great without any hitches as long as you are loud and clear.
If you're switching from GoPro and have any existing GoPro Accessories eg mounts, the VIRB will work with existing helmets mounts etc.

Pros

  • Rugged and durable design
  • Excellent Image Stabilisation
  • 4K 30 FPS and 1080p 60FPS
  • Waterproof with included case
  • Top Quality GPS Features

Cons

  • A tad bit expensive

GoPro HERO6 Black

  • Video Quality: 4K Video at 30 FPS
  • Image resolution: 12MP
  • Video Stabilisation: Hyper
  • Waterproof: Up To 33FT
  • Voice Control: Yes

A slightly smaller, yet still similar camera than most of the other GoPro cameras, the GoPro HERO6 Black is the second to last installment currently available. It features the basic GoPro design and is most available in black. However, white and silver can also be found if you do need a different color to support your stylish appearance.

One of the best things about buying a GoPro camera is that the functionality always remains the same. Much like its predecessors, this camera has the same functionality. The screen size remains the same, but a faster GP1 processor enables you to record videos with a 4K resolution at 60 frames per second, which is an upgrade from the HERO5.

The casing remains the same as the previous model with a 33-feet waterproof capability. This means you don’t need to shell out a couple of extra bucks to buy a brand new casing. The slow motion feature is great and you can shoot videos at 1080p resolution with 240 frames per second rate. Another massive upgrade from the previous model.

GoPro is one of the best brands when it comes to Digital Image Stabilization and you will immediately notice this as part of the top features of this camera. Once again, it will predict some of your movements, making it easier to have smooth imaging. However, this works best when the camera is mounted with the adventure kit.

Unfortunately, GoPro has never really done anything about their batteries. Most of the models have a lackluster battery that drains quite quickly with many people opting for backup batteries for longer adventures.

Drift Ghost 4K Action Camera

  • Video Quality: 4K Video at 60 FPS
  • Image resolution: 12MP
  • Video Stabilisation: Hyper
  • Waterproof: Up To 33FT
  • Voice Control: Yes

The Drift Ghost 4K Action Camera makes it onto our list next and it comes with a few state of the art features that complement the action sports lover. The camera as a whole features an ergonomic design that makes it really easy and simpler for you to actually use and records with a resolution of 4K at 30 frames per second.

Gyroscope technology is what we find in most airplanes and this camera has it included as part of the image stabilization features. It also features 2 microphones that helped us in recording all the sounds for the vlog in noisy areas. A 12MP camera is for your photos and the timelapse feature will ensure that you don’t need any remote access

Having such a unique design, the camera ports are also protected from potential dust that might fill it up and jam the camera. It is also shockproof for smaller falls, but with the rotating lens, we don’t really recommend having too many bumps. On a full charge, this battery should last a massive 150-minutes when recording at the highest resolution

Since the camera is one of the smallest, it works well when it is attached to your helmet for a hands-free experience. Unfortunately, the camera also comes with a few flaws and this is related to not being waterproof without having the right casing and you can’t really use it for your underwater recordings if you don’t buy the case.

It also does not comes with an LCD screen and this might be a little troublesome for many people looking to have someone help them with the recording processes. No Wi-Fi is added and this hinders some of us from instantly uploading or sharing some of our favorite captions to things like Instagram and even Facebook.

In Summary: If you are looking for another great entry-level camera, the Drift Ghost 4K is one of those cameras that will help you do it all without troubles. The camera is quite affordable and it has excellent stabilization. However, some of the key flaws are troublesome for those of us with a little more experience in the camera industry. It is a good buy for newcomers.

Pros

  • Small and Lightweight
  • Very Good Battery Life
  • 4K30 resolution
  • Gyroscope Technology
  • Reasonably Priced

Cons

  • No LCD Screen
  • No Waterproofing without a case

TomTom Bandit

  • Video Quality: 4K Video at 30 FPS
  • Image resolution: 12MP
  • Video Stabilisation: Yes
  • Waterproof: Up To 40FT
  • Voice Control: Yes

TomTom's GoPro Challenger comes in the form of a bullet cam. TomTom who are highly regarded for their GPS technology, have put a lot of thought and features into their challenger action cam to try and please action vloggers but was it enough?

The TomTom great on video at a recommended resolution of 30fps at 2.7k.. It has great 1080p at 60fps but it can only be used at 15 frames per second when the resolution is set to 4K, which we found stutters.  We would recommend 30FPS minimum at 4K as its a lot smoother on the eyes.
The 16MP camera itself  is capable of producing high-quality imaging without too much effort.

TomTom's navigation and user experience is as expected, it uses the D Pad which can be also found on TomToms sports watches. The LCD is on top of the bullet cam but only show status information about the cam and not what its actually shooting or seeing., but if you download the application you will be able to connect the bandit and have a look at the viewfinder.

Pros

Yi 4K+ Action Camera

  • Video Quality: 4K Video at 60 FPS
  • Image resolution: 12MP
  • Video Stabilisation: Hyper
  • Waterproof: Up To 33FT
  • Voice Control: Yes

The YI 4K+ Action Camera has an extremely attractive look. Upon opening the box, it looks like a rugged carbon fiber like design with elegant patterns around the camera lens. On the backside, the camera has a good looking touchscreen that allows you to change all the settings, but it is actually very minimalistic for the light traveler.

You Yi camera also includes a 4K60 resolution for your videos, but once you open the touchscreen, it is easy to see that every feature is laid out intuitively. The camera includes Wi-Fi connectivity like many of the other top options and an app is downloadable for Android or IOS devices. With a voice control option like the top GoPro models, the camera is challenging it for its throne

While the camera can give you 4K resolution at 60fps, it is worth noting that quad-core ARM processor is definitely one of the responsible parties for this feature. Electronic Image Stabilization is one of the tech features that Yi have included to make the device even easier to use when you are on the road or busy jumping off from some mountain.

One of the downsides is that it does lack the waterproofing feature. Without the casing, the camera is not intended to be placed in water. You should also note that the waterproof casing is not sold with the camera, but rather separately. Fortunately, the casing is not all that expensive and can definitely add a little more to your camera.

Unfortunately, the unit is also not waterproof if you don’t have the casing and much like the Yi 4K+, this is all sold separately, lifting your price a bit.

The YI 4K+ Action Camera is not one to be taken lightly. It might not have everything that GoPro has, but the features which are similar does challenge it for its crown. This camera is also a lot more affordable, even if you buy the casing separately. However, the stylish weave pattern that looks like carbon fiber is something that caught out attention.

One thing that could be a little better is the Android application. It does take a little time to figure out, but many people have found that connecting after the phone is in Airplane Mode works a little better when you can’t connect. Nevertheless, this is still rated as one of the top options currently available on the market today.

Pros

  • Stylish Lightweight design
  • 4K Recording at 60 & 30FPS
  • Powerful ARM Processor
  • Electronic Image Stabilization Technology
  • Best Priced 4K 60FPS Action Camera

Cons

  • Not waterproof without the casing
  • Android app sometime

Best action cameras under $150

Yi 4K Action & Sports Camera

  • Video Quality: 4K Video at 30 FPS
  • Image resolution: 12MP
  • Video Stabilisation: Hyper
  • Waterproof: Up To 33FT
  • Voice Control: Yes

The YI 4K Action and Sports Camera is eerily similar to the 4K+, but with a few differences. Unfortunately, it does not have the same stylish carbon fiber body that makes the 4K+ so attractive. However, the design still looks smooth and stylish and should work well for those in need of something stylish but not a GoPro.

It records 4K video at a decent 30 frames per second and should ensure that you can still have excellent camera images taken with the 12MP camera. It uses a Sony IMX377 sensor, which has been specifically designed for images that need to be taken in the middle of the action. This works well for diving and jumping acts.

One of the top features is definitely the lithium-ion battery that has been included. This battery is can record videos for up to 120-minutes at 4K30, making it one of the best batteries we have seen so far on this list. Instead of a D-pad, the touchpad on the LCD display is something we need to get used to, but will almost certainly help you change settings faster.

With the unit having Bluetooth and Wi-Fi capabilities, you can share all of your action images on the fly, which works well for updating your vlog at the right times to get the most traffic. The Yi Action APP does not have many flaws and it can even be used by beginners. However, you need to play around with it a little.

The SD card does have a few reading errors, you might need to look for a better card or even invoke your warranty to ensure you are ideally protected from things like this. Unfortunately, the unit is also not waterproof if you don’t have the casing and much like the Yi 4K+, this is all sold separately, lifting your price a bit

In Summary: This camera does not have many things that will keep you from buying it and it is perfect for those who love flying or jumping with their camera at hand. It might not compare to the processor of the Yi 4K+, but it is much more affordable. We would recommend it as one of the better models for beginners to test out.

Pros

  • Extremely durable housing unit
  • Optical Steadyshot for steady shooting
  • Timelapse at 4K Resolution
  • Waterproof up to 200FT
  • Stunning 4K Video at 60 FPS

Cons

  • No voice control
  • Really expensive

  • Video Quality: 4K Video at 30 FPS
  • Image resolution: 12MP
  • Video Stabilisation: Hyper
  • Waterproof: Up To 33FT
  • Voice Control: Yes

The SJCAM Sj7 4K is another 4K action cam, a GoPro rival albeit cheaper. The camera has a variety of features that action vloggers who are looking to invest in a camera on a budget will appreciate.

Video Quality: The SJ7 records in 4K @30FPS natively and not upscaled like previous SJ6. The image quality and the sharpness of the video has gotten a lot better. At 1080p HD, it allows for Electronic image stabilisation

The  SJ7 has a 2 inch touchscreen which is easy enough to navigate, but doesnt feature dazzling user experience with some having to press twice to get into the menu. One of the great things about the SJ7 that it does allow for external microphones to be attached to the camera for better audio.

There is an accompanying SJCam that connects to your smartphone through your WIFI to view images and video and make edits.

Pros

  • Extremely durable housing unit
  • Optical Steadyshot for steady shooting
  • Timelapse at 4K Resolution

Action Camera Buyers Guide

Action Camera Buyers Guide

Action cameras might seem simple enough, but that is not the case. There are a couple of intricate features that set them apart from the standard cameras that we all know. Fortunately, we have done a lot of digging to find many of these features. Here is a couple of most important to look for when buying an action camera:

Video Resolution

The video resolution is generally the first spec that you will look into. The quality of the video can definitely make or break your camera, especially for the active vlogger. When it comes to video resolution, we recommend looking in the direction of 4K. However, you also need to understand that this will inevitably lift the price

The frames per second can also be an important part of the quality and this can make the picture look even better for your audience. Nowadays cameras with a 4K resolution can produce videos in the range of 60 frames per second. However, 30 frames per second should still be perfect in the modern age for your action camera.

The video resolution might be the most important part, but your camera quality can also make or break it. Most cameras will have a 12MP camera for snapping your favorite shots. However, the higher quality images your camera can take, the better it will be as well. We do recommend spending the extra couple of bucks to ensure that you find the best quality camera.

With all these cameras, the video resolution is one of the first things we considered. This can also be broken into live streaming over Wi-Fi and simply recording. You will notice that live streaming might not have such a great video quality. The best we have seen is 1080p HD for most of the high-end action cameras available today.

Image Stabilisation

If you think it does not apply to you, try taking a good quality video with your mobile device whilst jumping up and down and you will notice how hard to focus is. Image stabilization in cameras like the GoPro devices work by predicting your motions and centering the camera into one specific area. This makes it much easier to actually take good quality videos.

Image Stabilisation Image

There are a couple of different stabilization methods that camera brands include, but we are going to explain two of these. Gyroscopic technology is one of the first and this electronically operated technology helps to keep the lens centered in one area or it picks a target that needs to be focused on. Since it is electronic, it is one of the best-automated options.

No matter what the reason for your purchase might be, image stabilization does play an important role in your selection process. While photos can be taken by a steady hand, videos are where the real problems come from and you need to have some sort of technology that will help with those bumps and tremors.

Optical stabilization is found in many of the cheaper models and while there are many different names for it, it all comes down to the same thing. The lens will physically move to counteract some of the motions and to keep the camera pointing in the right direction. Since it is more physical, it does put the lens more at risk, but can be a little cheaper.

No matter which of these methods you choose, you need some sort of video and photo stabilization in your camera. Vloggers will have a hard time capturing the best parts of videos if they are into the active lifestyle. We also recommend spending a little more on this feature if you have to. This will ensure a better quality vlog.

Durability

Whilst looking at some of the features of the top action cameras, we noticed that many people neglect the durability aspect. However, action sports enthusiasts will know how much punishment their body takes from their sport and this means the camera might also need to take some of these blows outdoors.

The durability aspect directly refers to things like it being shockproof. Yes, your camera will be mounted and you might definitely have a case that can protect it, but a shockproof design will also keep your lenses protected. Since they are the most expensive part of the camera, they deserve to have the best possible protection.

Aside from being shockproof, it definitely won’t hurt to have a camera that is waterproof, but this is measured in different ratings. Top cameras like Sony feature a built-in shell that will keep the water out, but other brands do require some sort of case that will protect all the small entrance holes from accidentally filling up.

Once all of those features have been settled, it also works quite well to ensure the camera does have some sort of dust protection. This can be thanks to covers on the holes or the casing. We prefer having covers on the holes that are made from rubber as it will serve two purposes in protecting the camera in the water and keeping some of the dust from entering.

Remote Operation & Voice Control

Occasionally, we find ourselves alone and no one to help us with the recording, which can be a buzzkill. But you can still capture every great moment, with built in voice control or remote control features on some of the action a cameras mentioned above.

The voice control option will allow you to give the camera commands, think of it as an Alexa for your GoPro. It should do exactly what you need it to do and ensure that you have the video capture when you need it as you venture out.

Unfortunately, this can add a massive price to your camera and when you consider brands like GoPro with a feature like this, you notice how expensive they are. However, the best vloggers and the advanced outdoor lovers should be able to pay this from the quality of their content that will easily outshine the others vlogs. Yes, we definitely recommend voice control for your action camera and they can be found as cheap as $200.

These features might be considered the most important, but there are also a few other features that we have not yet mentioned. These features are things that you need to keep in mind when you have all the above-mentioned features covered and want something truly spectacular to help improve your vlog quality:

Accessories: Buying them separately can be a little expensive, but you need to keep the accessories in mind as well. The accessories will ensure the camera can be mounted to your head or even left somewhere for a more stable image caption. There are numerous different accessory options to choose from.

GPS: GPS technology is mostly found in cameras by brands like TomTom and Garmin. However, these are the brands that will help you as an expert to share your location for your followers to see. If it includes a GPS, chances are it will also have some sort of compass and even a thermometer for the temperature.

Battery life: Lastly, you need to keep the battery life in mind as well and having a good quality battery will help you stay out longer. Most cameras will either use the CR2 battery or a lithium-ion alternative. We recommend the lithium-ion battery and it has a proven record for allowing video streams for a longer time period.

Our Reccomendations

If you are still not sure which of these cameras will be the best for you, here is our list of recommendations based on your skill level to help ensure that you do find the best one for your needs:

BEGGINERS & HOBBYISTS

Beginners can look at the GoPro models as they are basically designed for everyone, but the Yi 4K+ Action Camera definitely stands out for beginners. It has great image stabilization technology and the price is really affordable. This camera also works wonders if you don’t need to have something like the APP. As we have already mentioned, there are a few problems and glitches, specifically for the Android users.

Most of the cameras around the $100 mark should do for a beginner and as you start generating income or simply feel that you would like to take some of your adventures to the next level, you can decide to upgrade to a better option. Beginner models also work for most hobbyists only using them occasionally or with family.

Yi 4K Action Camera

Intermediate & Expert

As an intermediate, you definitely need something better and the GoPro Hero7 should be the perfect option for all your needs. This camera is state of the art and the image stabilization is off the chart. However, the live streaming is the best part and since you are probably still experimenting with stunts, the battery life might not be an issue.
